The maps

Each map is modelled on real rolling stock: car length, door layout and livery follow the original trains. Paint layups, depots, tunnels and backjumps in cities across Europe, each with its own light and mood.

Spray that behaves like spray

The can responds to how you hold it: how far away you are, how fast you move and what you are painting on. Nothing is a fixed brush stroke.

Distance and angle

Close to the surface the line is sharp and dense. Back off and the cone widens into a soft, dusty band. Spray across a surface at a shallow angle and the paint smears and thins out, like on a real wall.

Speed and flare

A slow pass lays down thick, saturated paint. A quick flick pinches the line to a thin taper. Flare sets how strongly speed changes the width, so you can draw clean fat caps or fast outlines.

Build-up and drips

Paint builds in layers. Go over a line again to deepen it, or hold still and the spray pools into a hollow ring and starts to run. Overspray and splatter gather along the edges of slow strokes.

Surfaces and finishes

Ribbed sides, doors, roofs and rough concrete each break up the line differently. Chrome, gold, copper and tar black catch light in their own way, and the washer takes paint back off in streaks.

Questions

Is TrainWars free?

Yes. The free maps, the spray can and every colour have no time limit. The Full Game is a one-time payment that unlocks exclusive maps, the Chrome, Gold, Copper and Tar black finishes, the squeezer, the wide marker, the Superwide 750 and 150 blackbook pages. Some limited-edition content may be sold separately.

Do I need an account?

No. You can play without signing in, and your painting saves in your browser. An account uses an email link, no password. It saves your work to the cloud and lets you post to the community.

Does it work on phones and tablets?

Yes. TrainWars plays in your phone's browser, held sideways: one finger paints, two thumb pads walk and look. For the best experience, add it to your Home Screen, where it runs full screen with no browser bars.

What do I need to play?

A current version of Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari, on a computer or a phone. On a computer, a mouse is recommended.

Can I share what I paint?

Yes. Take a photo in the game to download it or save it to your blackbook. Signed-in players can post one photo a week to the community wall.

LOOK
HOW TO PLAY

Paint the train.

Walk around, pick a colour and spray. Paint builds up with each pass, so layer it for solid coverage. Switch maps from the MAPS button.

Paint
Drag to spray. Hold still for a round spray mark and drips. Dust sets the grain. Opacity sets how much paint comes out.
Look and move
Right-drag or use the look pad to turn. W A S D or the arrow keys walk and strafe. Scroll or use + and − to zoom.
Touch
One finger paints. Two fingers or the look pad turn the view. Pinch to walk.
Undo
Ctrl / ⌘ Z undoes the last stroke. The last seven strokes are kept.
Tracks
Stay off the tracks.
Station video
Watch your painted train roll through a station.
Take a photo
Adds flash, film grain and a date stamp. Save it to your blackbook or download it.
Saving
Your painting saves in this browser after every stroke. Sign in to save it to your account and open it on any device. The blackbook keeps your saved paintings and photos. Each one uses a page: 10 pages on the free plan, 150 with the Full Game.
Full Game
Unlocks Chrome, Gold, Copper, Metallic blue and red, Tar black, the Squeezer, the Wide marker, the Superwide 750 can and more maps.
